The Heart of Pontarelli: A Family Legacy Built on Honor and Service

Pontarelli’s story begins with a man whose dedication to service set the standard for everything we stand for today — our founder, Arthur Rento Sr. (1923–2018).

A proud American hero, Art Sr. served as a Combat Engineer with the U.S. Army’s First Infantry Division during World War II. His 27-month tour took him from the beaches of Normandy to the Philippines during the final days of the war. When he returned home to Chicago, he carried with him the values that would define both his life and his business — discipline, integrity, and perseverance.

Art Sr. first launched a cab company, which he operated for more than 15 years before joining the City of Chicago as an investigator. In 1977, while still working for the city, he partnered with Jerry Pontarelli to start what would become Pontarelli Livery Service. Because Art’s position prevented him from using his own name on the business, the company carried the Pontarelli name — a decision that has become a lasting symbol of partnership, loyalty, and family values.

When Art Sr. retired in 1981, his children and grandchildren proudly took the wheel, continuing the legacy he began. Today, Pontarelli remains a true family business, built on generations of hard work, respect, and a commitment to serving others — just as our founder served his country.
