There are so many different events to choose from when it comes to celebrating St. Patrick’s Day in the Windy City, but one of the quintessential annual Chicago events has to be the dyeing of the Chicago River. A tradition for over 50 years, this unique and beloved spectacle sees over 400,000 spectators descend on the banks of the river to watch as the waters are transformed into sparkling emerald green. Head down early to catch the event which starts at 9am (the dye only keeps the river looking green for around 5 hours), then stick around to watch the spectacular parade wend its way downtown afterwards, starting at Balbo Drive around 1pm. Now in its 63rd year, this is the largest St. Patty’s parade in the entire country and is not to be missed if you’re in the city on March 17!
If you feel like marking your St. Patrick’s Day celebrations with a unique twist on tradition, try heading down to City Winery Chicago where several heated River Domes will line the river walk area, so you can enjoy private outdoor seating with your group while still protected from the early Spring chill. Spectacular views of the city skyline and across the water make for a special way to toast the day.
But to really party the night away and celebrate in style, head down to the 43rd annual Forever Green event held at the historic Chicago Cultural Center, this year on Friday March 9. This long-running St. Patrick’s Day institution is the real deal – with traditional Irish music from DJ Vaughn, the Shannon Rovers Pipe Band, and The Chancey Brothers, as well as spectacular dancing demonstrations from Mullane Godley Irish Dance Academy. It has grown over the years to become the largest St. Patrick’s Day party in the city for young and old, and has also raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for local Chicago charities since it’s beginnings as a basement celebration for a group of old friends.
